Yesterday was &ldquo;D&iacute;a de Muertos&rdquo; in Mexico. It&rsquo;s becoming increasingly popular at the international level, almost competing with halloween.
Halloween&rsquo;s &ldquo;trick or treating&rdquo; might&rsquo;ve been fun in the past, but this year, apparently we all have to adapt to &ldquo;trunk or treating&rdquo;. It&rsquo;s either we dress up in costumes, get in the car and get candy in the trunks of our cars, or nothing.
COVID-19 has changed traditions, celebrations and transformed any massive social gatherings.
You might laugh if you are mexican, because while I was thinking about how to celebrate this year&rsquo;s Day of the Dead, I couldn&rsquo;t help but to start singing Bronco&rsquo;s famous song: &ldquo;May No Traces Be Left&rdquo;

This is exactly how I feel we are dealing with the present situation. Instead of going through pain and suffering and dealing with our feelings, we might as well leave no traces behind.
There&rsquo;s no time to waste. There&rsquo;s no need. We might just pretend the past never happened.
For the commemoration of the Day of the Dead, we&rsquo;re not allowed to go to Pantheons anymore and offer our ancestors food, a prayer or a moment to coexist amongst the living and the dead.
It&rsquo;s funny because for us, the dead souls come back on this day to rejoice with the living and honour our past. Death does not represent losing someone or an eternal absence. Tombs are decorated with cempas&uacute;chil flowers and lighted candles to guide the way of your loved ones, originally from your home to the pantheon.
&nbsp;Instead, Mexico has declared three national days of &ldquo;national mourning&rdquo; due to the increasing numbers of deaths due to COVID-19. This is the new reality. So the new way of celebrating will be from our homes,&nbsp; brought to you live on TV.
&ldquo;May there be no footprint&rdquo;
&nbsp;Well, except for one other tradition which hopefully will continue and does not include social gatherings: writing the &ldquo;calaverita&rdquo;.
As creative as can be, we write our own poetic version of how to laugh at our own deaths, including those of celebrities, politicians and even narcos.
I leave you with one a friend wrote to me which includes the carbon footprint. I thought it was funny and an appropriate concern added to the COVID-19 crisis:

D&iacute;a de Muertos, Bronco y la Calaverita &nbsp; 2 de noviembre de 2020. &nbsp; Ayer fue "D&iacute;a de Muertos" en M&eacute;xico. Se est&aacute; volviendo cada vez m&aacute;s popular a nivel internacional, casi compitiendo con Halloween. &nbsp; El "truco o trato" de Halloween puede haber sido divertido en el pasado, pero este a&ntilde;o, aparentemente todos tenemos que adaptarnos al "truco o trato". O nos disfrazamos, nos subimos al auto y nos damos dulces en los ba&uacute;les de nuestros autos, o nada. &nbsp; COVID-19 ha cambiado las tradiciones, las celebraciones y ha transformado cualquier reuni&oacute;n social masiva. &nbsp; Pueden re&iacute;rse si son mexicanos, porque mientras pensaba en c&oacute;mo celebrar el D&iacute;a de los Muertos de este a&ntilde;o, no pude evitar empezar a cantar la famosa canci&oacute;n de Bronco: "Que no quede ning&uacute;n rastro" &nbsp; Por favor, escuchen el principio mientras repasan las letras, no puedo prometerles que entiendan por qu&eacute; esto se convirti&oacute; en un &eacute;xito internacional pero vale la pena intentarlo: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fb08WzdP7F0">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fb08WzdP7F0</a> &nbsp; Esta canci&oacute;n que canto amigos Es una mas de dolor Si es que me ven llorando amigos Disc&uacute;lpenme por favor &nbsp; Traigo en el alma pena y llanto Que no puedo contener Y es que la quiero tanto y tanto Pero me toc&oacute; perder &nbsp; Y ahora tengo que olvidarla tambi&eacute;n Y arrancarla de mi alma y mi ser Y de aquel amor que quema mi piel Que no quede nada &nbsp; Que no quede huella que no y que no Que no quede huella Porque estoy seguro de que t&uacute; mi amor Ya ni me recuerdas &nbsp; As&iacute; es exactamente como siento que estamos tratando con la situaci&oacute;n actual. Podr&iacute;amos fingir que el pasado nunca sucedi&oacute;. &nbsp; Para la conmemoraci&oacute;n del D&iacute;a de los Muertos, ya no se nos permite ir a los panteones y ofrecer a nuestros antepasados comida, una oraci&oacute;n o un momento para coexistir entre los vivos y los muertos. &nbsp; Es curioso porque para nosotros, las almas muertas vuelven en este d&iacute;a para regocijarse con los vivos y honrar nuestro pasado. La muerte no representa la p&eacute;rdida de alguien o una ausencia eterna. Las tumbas est&aacute;n decoradas con flores de cempas&uacute;chil y velas encendidas para guiar el camino de tus seres queridos, originalmente desde tu casa hasta el pante&oacute;n. &nbsp; En su lugar, M&eacute;xico ha declarado tres d&iacute;as nacionales de "luto nacional" debido al creciente n&uacute;mero de muertes por COVID-19. Esta es la nueva realidad. As&iacute; que la nueva forma de celebrar ser&aacute; desde nuestras casas, tra&iacute;da a ustedes en vivo por televisi&oacute;n. &nbsp; "Qu&eacute; no quede huella..." &nbsp; Bueno, excepto por otra tradici&oacute;n que esperamos contin&uacute;e y no incluya reuniones sociales: escribir la "calaverita". &nbsp; Tan creativo como se pueda, escribimos nuestra propia versi&oacute;n po&eacute;tica de c&oacute;mo re&iacute;rnos de nuestras propias muertes, incluyendo las de famosos, pol&iacute;ticos e incluso narcos. &nbsp; Les dejo con una que me escribi&oacute; un amigo y que incluye la huella de carbono. Me pareci&oacute; gracioso y una preocupaci&oacute;n apropiada a&ntilde;adida a la crisis de COVID-19: &nbsp; Calaverita por Eduardo Cordova Estaba la flaca y huesuda muy animada por la gran fiesta que le hab&iacute;an planeado. En la mesa hab&iacute;a pan, tamales y atole, Pero los huesos le temblaban de saborear el tequila y el mole.
El catr&iacute;n manejando y fumando estaba, sin pensar en la huella de carbono que a su paso dejaba. "Inconsciente no debes ser" le dec&iacute;a su mujer amada "Pues qu&eacute; no ves que por tu imprudencia a todos nos va a llevar la tostada".
