Faced with a world that is suffocating and heating up amidst greenhouse gases, today more than ever we believe in the relevance of learning about existing solutions that can transform our reality. One of the more obvious solutions is forests: the vegetation that has inhabited our planet for millions of years before our arrival and that is not only a respite from, but a solution to many of our problems. Plants, in general, possess a property opposite to humans: they are able to capture carbon dioxide in their tissues and in their soils, which means that they are great heroines that fight against the climate crisis by <a href="https://toroto.com/en/blog/carbon-offseting-explained" target="_blank" rel="noopener">compensating</a>, that is, sequestering, these polluting gases that we humans decide to emit excessively into the atmosphere&mdash;provoking a global crisis&mdash;and storing them in their bodies for a great amount of time.&nbsp;
The carbon sequestration that occurs in forests results from a universe of situations ranging from the very biology of these organisms and their need to absorb atmospheric carbon to grow and survive, to purely anthropocentric scenarios such as the growing and innovative carbon market, which determines the price and quality of the compensation that this vegetation makes possible and the additionality that this generates for humans and the rest of the world's biodiversity. Let us dive deeper into this review of concepts, challenges, and solutions so revolutionary that they offer us, once again, a breath of clean air to face the climate crisis.
 
Toroto: How do forests capture carbon? What happens in trees? How do they "inhale" carbon dioxide (CO2) and "exhale" oxygen?
Lucero: You could say, put very simply, that plants breathe as animals do but in reverse. We inhale oxygen, use it to produce energy and as a result, we exhale carbon dioxide. In contrast, plants "breathe in" carbon dioxide and, through photosynthesis, use this molecule to produce the carbohydrates that are their main source of energy, and &ldquo;exhale&rdquo; oxygen. Carbohydrates are composed of different elements that plants obtain from both soil and water through root absorption, but their only source of carbon is the carbon dioxide that plants capture from the air. They do this through tiny structures found mostly in the leaves called "stomata" which are responsible for carrying out the exchange of gases: inhaling carbon dioxide and exhaling oxygen. Plant growth is directly related to the production of carbohydrates and, therefore, to carbon sequestration. When we talk about trees, this is translated into the production of lignin, which is the main component of wood. If we look at the macro level, the growth of a forest involves the capture of many tons of carbon dioxide and its transformation into wood. However, the plants that produce wood are not the only ones that capture carbon dioxide.
 
T: Can any forest sequester carbon? Are other types of vegetation just as efficient at sequestering carbon?&nbsp;&nbsp;
L: All forests sequester carbon, but not all sequester the same amount or at the same rate. This makes more sense if we compare a forest with the growth of a human being: a child grows a lot, while an adult doesn't grow (physically of course, in terms of developmental growth) at all. Thus, young forests tend to capture more carbon dioxide than mature forests. Of course, this does not diminish the value of an old forest since all that mature wood represents tons of carbon already captured and stored, and that is not in the atmosphere. It is important to mention that, as well as capturing carbon dioxide, forests also release a certain amount of this gas, mainly related to the decomposition of organic matter that the ecosystem is not able to reintegrate. However, the balance in a healthy forest is always positive, that is, it always captures much more than it releases. This is a good indicator of whether something is not in balance or functioning properly in the ecosystem. Concerning the ability of other types of vegetation to capture carbon, yes. There are ecosystems that promote carbon sequestration not only in the wood of the trees, but also in the soil, as is the case of mangroves. A mangrove can have more carbon captured in the soil than in the wood. Something similar happens with the tundra, which is one of the most efficient ecosystems for capturing carbon; however, unlike mangroves, we do not have tundra in Mexico.
 
T: What is involved in managing a forest sustainably for a carbon sequestration project? How long is the project viable?&nbsp;
L: Sometimes the objective of carbon sequestration projects is to ensure the future growth of forests that are under significant pressure from land-use change. In others, it is so that the forest can sequester carbon at a faster rate than it would have without the project. This can be done through ecological restoration, which seeks to remove sources of disturbance that negatively impact forest health and resilience so that the forest can reach a pre-disturbance successional state, and thus continue its natural growth. It may be that, for example, uncontrolled grazing prevents natural regeneration from occurring and there are no young trees. If livestock can be excluded from these areas, seedlings will establish from the same seed bank that is already there, and over the years the young forest cover will increase, promoting the natural cycle of growth, death, and regeneration that characterizes life and, in the same way, carbon sequestration.
However, for this to happen sustainably, a socioeconomic component must invariably be included since practically all of Mexico's territory is owned and ruled by ejidatarios and comunidades agrarias, or agricultural communities, as a result of the redistribution of land that occurred with the Agrarian Reform. If the restoration of a forest does not represent a tangible benefit for the landowners, but rather an impediment to improving their quality of life, the project is not viable. The trick, and the most complex part, is to find the perfect combination of practices that represent benefits for all parties involved so that the project triggers a virtuous circle instead of a vicious one. In the specific example of grazing, it is important to find a way for the project to also benefit the farmers, who will need to compensate for the food excluded from their animals' diets. If a component of grazing management, capacity building, and alternative animal feed production is included within the scope of the project, it is much more viable for these people to join the main objective, which is to recover the health of the forest and capture carbon as a consequence. Luckily, there are high-impact examples such as silvopastoral management systems.&nbsp;
As long as all the stakeholders involved benefit transparently and fairly, the project will have a long life because it will be in the interest of all parties that it does not end. In this regard, it is important to note the ideal duration of a carbon sequestration project, which is related to the average time that a molecule of carbon dioxide remains in the atmosphere causing global warming. This time is about 100 years for the majority of atmospheric CO2, therefore, this is the duration for a project on private property; when implemented on communal property (i.e., ejidos or indigenous communities), the maximum allowed by the Agrarian Law in Mexico is 30 years, which can be extended year by year as long as the landowners wish to do so. However, whether it is 100 or 30 years, the important thing is that the processes involved in carbon sequestration in natural ecosystems occur over the long term, so carbon sequestration projects should be extended as much as possible over time, otherwise they make no sense.
 
T: Which problem jeopardizes forests and their function as carbon sinks the most?
L: Definitely what puts forests most at risk is land-use change. This can have different causes, depending on the area. For Mexico: in the periphery of the cities, this cause is the growth of urban sprawl; in the south, it is the explosion of extensive cattle ranching. The decrease in forest cover not only means that there are fewer forests, but also impacts the remaining vegetation&mdash;that is, the little bit of native vegetation that still remains&mdash;and its connectivity and dynamics with other forest areas. The decrease in forest cover is related to the increase in global temperature and increasingly erratic rainfall, aggravating droughts and stressing the ecosystems that are still standing. In fact, according to <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03629-6.epdf?sharing_token=6E9h860hxCCCFQc6ACZKwdRgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0NILaci0q8CXtVe4JKM-xF0Z0ZQpmJpnpSclAjJeIV-vCjviXK_Mb9hvvU5C3CiJVgu82-RGuHR01gFiQZAVMzDCCxiRyvlh0MBQxTvGN2oHmf2jIOC7MEEGXrOPGIblsh57v9qXkkZbM7U0OH8zbdQ4jnVO1zD9R1jeDcUVBS22YVLkjWEvC5vrNMdQ416fmEBL9kIHYs2ptVibFKXLxEuh-TQ08w-QGSFzN6221Kggm8B5bEKuuSMbh9mQSSzoXcrpsYaMSbBdd68V6tbi7MAre5V-pHnX86KD80Th4gVmA%3D%3D&amp;tracking_referrer=www.theguardian.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a highly circulated study published in the journal Nature</a> late last year, this vicious cycle may result in forests emitting more carbon dioxide than they capture.&nbsp;&nbsp;
 
T: How do you measure carbon sequestration in a forest? Who checks it? Are there any international regulations or standards that deal with it?
L: Carbon sequestration in a forest can be quantified by measuring the growth of the trees. By measuring the diameter at breast height, total height, crown height, and identifying the species, you can know the volume and density of the wood that the tree contains, and this can be translated into tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e). This is the same unit used to measure a company's pollution, making it an effective tool that allows us to compare the pollution generated with the carbon captured, or the amount of pollution that is sequestered and therefore offset. Fortunately, it is not necessary to measure all the trees in the forest, since through statistical processes, sampling sites are selected whose measurement is representative of the entire project area.
 It is important to emphasize that not all the wood in a forest can be translated into carbon credits since plant growth prior to the start of the project cannot be counted as credits because it already existed; it is not additional. Carbon sequestration that can be converted into credits begins when the landowners decide to implement the project and the baseline measurement is carried out, which is the study that will indicate how much carbon there was at the start of the project. From this point on, all growth represents credits. Now, different international protocols serve to certify the baseline measurements and ensure projections of credits production are not over or underestimated, which is very important because these projects must be as close to science and reality as possible. The two most widely used protocols in Mexico are those of the California Climate Action Reserve (CAR) and Verra.

Ante un mundo que se asfixia y se calienta entre gases de efecto invernadero, pensamos que hoy m&aacute;s que nunca es relevante conocer las soluciones que existen para transformar nuestra realidad. Una de &eacute;stas, son los bosques: ese conjunto de vegetaci&oacute;n que ha habitado nuestro planeta millones de a&ntilde;os antes de nuestra llegada y que es &ndash;no s&oacute;lo un respiro&ndash; sino una soluci&oacute;n a muchos de nuestros problemas. Las plantas en general poseen una propiedad contraria a la humana: son capaces de capturar di&oacute;xido de carbono en sus tejidos y en sus suelos, lo que significa que son grandes hero&iacute;nas que luchan contra la crisis clim&aacute;tica al <a href="https://toroto.com/blog/la-compensacion-de-carbono-explicada" target="_blank" rel="noopener">compensar</a>, es decir, secuestrar, estos gases contaminantes que los humanos decidimos emitir desmedidamente a la atm&oacute;sfera &ndash;provocando una crisis global&ndash; y almacenarlos en sus cuerpos por una gran gran cantidad de tiempo.&nbsp;
La captura de carbono que ocurre en los bosques resulta de un universo de situaciones que van desde la biolog&iacute;a misma de estos organismos y su necesidad de absorber carbono atmosf&eacute;rico para crecer y sobrevivir, hasta escenarios meramente antropoc&eacute;ntricas como lo es el creciente y novedoso mercado de carbono, el determinar el precio y la calidad de la compensaci&oacute;n que esta vegetaci&oacute;n realiza y la adicionalidad que esto genera para los humanos y la dem&aacute;s biodiversidad del mundo. Introduzc&aacute;monos un poco m&aacute;s en este espacio de conceptos, retos y soluciones tan revolucionario que nos ofrece &ndash;nuevamente&ndash; un respiro de aire limpio para enfrentar la crisis clim&aacute;tica.
 
Toroto: &iquest;C&oacute;mo es que los bosques secuestran carbono? &iquest;Qu&eacute; sucede en los &aacute;rboles? &iquest;C&oacute;mo es que &ldquo;inhalan&rdquo; di&oacute;xido de carbono (CO2 ) y &ldquo;exhalan&rdquo; ox&iacute;geno?
Lucero: Podr&iacute;a decirse, de manera muy simple, que las plantas respiran a la inversa de los animales. Nosotros inhalamos ox&iacute;geno, lo utilizamos para producir energ&iacute;a y como resultado exhalamos di&oacute;xido de carbono. En cambio, las plantas &ldquo;respiran&rdquo; di&oacute;xido de carbono y por medio de la fotos&iacute;ntesis, utilizan esta mol&eacute;cula para producir carbohidratos, los cuales son su principal fuente de energ&iacute;a. Los carbohidratos est&aacute;n compuestos de diferentes elementos que las plantas obtienen tanto del suelo como del agua a trav&eacute;s de la absorci&oacute;n por la ra&iacute;z, pero su &uacute;nica fuente de carbono es el di&oacute;xido de carbono que capturan del aire. Lo hacen a trav&eacute;s de una estructura peque&ntilde;ita que se encuentra mayoritariamente en las hojas llamada &ldquo;estoma&rdquo; que se encarga de llevar a cabo el intercambio de gases: inhalar di&oacute;xido de carbono, exhalar ox&iacute;geno. El crecimiento de las plantas est&aacute; directamente relacionado con la producci&oacute;n de carbohidratos y, por ende, con el secuestro de carbono. Cuando hablamos de &aacute;rboles, esto se ve traducido en la producci&oacute;n de lignina, que es el principal componente de la madera. Si lo vemos a nivel macro, el crecimiento de un bosque implica la captura de muchas toneladas de di&oacute;xido de carbono y su transformaci&oacute;n en madera. Sin embargo, no s&oacute;lo las plantas que producen madera capturan di&oacute;xido de carbono.
 
T: &iquest;Cualquier bosque puede secuestrar carbono? &iquest;Otros tipos de vegetaci&oacute;n son igual de eficientes para secuestrar carbono?&nbsp;
L: Todos los bosques capturan carbono, pero no todos capturan la misma cantidad o al mismo ritmo. Esto cobra m&aacute;s sentido si lo comparamos con el crecimiento de un ser humano: un ni&ntilde;o crece much&iacute;simo, mientras que un adulto ya no crece. As&iacute;, los bosques j&oacute;venes tienden a capturar una mayor cantidad de di&oacute;xido de carbono que los bosques maduros. Claro, esto no quita del valor de un bosque viejo, porque toda esa madera madura representa toneladas de carbono ya capturado que no est&aacute; en la atm&oacute;sfera. Es importante mencionar que, as&iacute; como capturan di&oacute;xido de carbono, los bosques tambi&eacute;n liberan una cierta cantidad de este gas relacionada principalmente con la descomposici&oacute;n de materia org&aacute;nica que el ecosistema no es capaz de reintegrar. Sin embargo, un balance en un bosque sano siempre es positivo, es decir, siempre captura mucho m&aacute;s de lo que libera. Lo anterior es un buen indicador para conocer si algo no est&aacute; en equilibrio o funcionando correctamente en el ecosistema. Con respecto a los dem&aacute;s tipos de vegetaci&oacute;n, s&iacute;. Hay ecosistemas que promueven la captura de carbono no s&oacute;lo en la madera de los &aacute;rboles, sino tambi&eacute;n en el suelo, como es el caso de los manglares. Un manglar puede tener m&aacute;s carbono capturado en el suelo que en la madera. Algo similar sucede con la tundra, que es uno de los ecosistemas m&aacute;s eficientes para capturar carbono, sin embargo, a diferencia del manglar, la tundra en M&eacute;xico no la tenemos.
 
T: &iquest;Qu&eacute; implica manejar un bosque de manera sostenible para un proyecto de secuestro de carbono? &iquest;Por cu&aacute;nto tiempo es viable el proyecto?&nbsp;
L: En algunas ocasiones, el objetivo de los proyectos de captura de carbono es asegurar el crecimiento futuro de bosques que est&aacute;n bajo una importante presi&oacute;n de cambio de uso del suelo. En otras, es que el bosque pueda capturar carbono a una velocidad mayor de la que tendr&iacute;a sin el proyecto. Esto se puede llevar a cabo a trav&eacute;s de restauraci&oacute;n ecol&oacute;gica, la cual busca remover las fuentes de disturbios que impactan negativamente la salud y resiliencia del bosque para que este pueda alcanzar un estado sucesional anterior a la perturbaci&oacute;n, y por ende, continuar con su crecimiento natural. Puede ser que, por ejemplo, el pastoreo descontrolado impida que ocurra regeneraci&oacute;n natural y no haya &aacute;rboles j&oacute;venes. Si se logra excluir el ganado de estas zonas, se establecer&aacute;n pl&aacute;ntulas a partir del mismo banco de semillas que ya est&aacute; ah&iacute;, y con los a&ntilde;os aumentar&aacute; la cobertura forestal j&oacute;ven, promoviendo el ciclo natural de crecimiento, muerte y regeneraci&oacute;n que caracteriza a la vida y de la misma forma, la captura de carbono.
Ahora bien, para que esto suceda de una manera sostenible, invariablemente debe incluirse un componente socioecon&oacute;mico, ya que pr&aacute;cticamente todo el territorio mexicano tiene due&ntilde;o, producto de la redistribuci&oacute;n de tierras que ocurri&oacute; con la Reforma Agraria. Si la restauraci&oacute;n de un bosque no representa un beneficio tangible para los due&ntilde;os de la tierra, sino un impedimento para mejorar su calidad de vida, el proyecto no es viable. El truco, y la parte m&aacute;s compleja, est&aacute; en encontrar la combinaci&oacute;n perfecta de pr&aacute;cticas que represente beneficios para todas las partes involucradas y que el proyecto detone un c&iacute;rculo virtuoso en lugar de uno vicioso. En el ejemplo concreto del pastoreo, es importante encontrar la manera de que el proyecto beneficie tambi&eacute;n a los ganaderos, quienes se ver&aacute;n en la necesidad de compensar el alimento excluido de la dieta de sus animales. Si se incluye un componente de gesti&oacute;n de pastoreo, fortalecimiento de capacidades y producci&oacute;n de alimento alternativo, es mucho m&aacute;s viable que estas personas se sumen al objetivo principal, que es recuperar la salud del bosque y capturar carbono como consecuencia. Tenemos ejemplos de gran impacto como lo son los sistemas de manejo silvopastoril.&nbsp;
Mientras todos los actores involucrados se beneficien de manera transparente y justa, el proyecto tendr&aacute; una larga vida porque estar&aacute; en el inter&eacute;s de todas las partes que &eacute;ste no termine. En este aspecto, es importante se&ntilde;alar la duraci&oacute;n ideal de un proyecto de captura de carbono, el cual est&aacute; relacionado con el tiempo promedio que una mol&eacute;cula de di&oacute;xido de carbono permanece en la atm&oacute;sfera provocando calentamiento global. Este tiempo es de 100 a&ntilde;os, por lo mismo, &eacute;sta es la duraci&oacute;n para un proyecto en propiedad privada; cuando se implementa en propiedad social (es decir, ejidos o comunidades ind&iacute;genas), lo m&aacute;ximo permitido por la Ley Agraria en M&eacute;xico son 30 a&ntilde;os, los cuales pueden extenderse a&ntilde;o con a&ntilde;o mientras los due&ntilde;os de la tierra as&iacute; lo deseen y lo vean conveniente. No obstante, sean 100 o 30 a&ntilde;os, lo importante es que los procesos que conllevan la captura de carbono en los ecosistemas naturales ocurran a largo plazo, por lo que los proyectos de captura de carbono deben extenderse lo m&aacute;s posible en el tiempo, de lo contrario carecen de sentido.
 
T: &iquest;Cu&aacute;l es la problem&aacute;tica que pone m&aacute;s en riesgo a los bosques y su funci&oacute;n como sumideros de carbono?
L: Definitivamente lo que m&aacute;s pone en riesgo a los bosques es el cambio de uso del suelo. &Eacute;ste puede tener distintas razones de ser, dependiendo de la zona. Para M&eacute;xico: en la periferia de las ciudades, es el crecimiento de la mancha urbana; en el sur, es la explosi&oacute;n de la ganader&iacute;a extensiva. La disminuci&oacute;n de la cobertura forestal no s&oacute;lo significa que haya menos bosques, sino que tambi&eacute;n impacta a la vegetaci&oacute;n remanente, es decir, ese poco de vegetaci&oacute;n nativa que a&uacute;n nos queda, y su conectividad y din&aacute;mica con otras zonas forestales. La disminuci&oacute;n de la cobertura forestal est&aacute; relacionada con el aumento de la temperatura y el que las lluvias se comporten de manera cada vez m&aacute;s err&aacute;tica, agravando las sequ&iacute;as y estresando al ecosistema que contin&uacute;a todav&iacute;a en pie. De hecho, de acuerdo a <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03629-6.epdf?sharing_token=6E9h860hxCCCFQc6ACZKwdRgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0NILaci0q8CXtVe4JKM-xF0Z0ZQpmJpnpSclAjJeIV-vCjviXK_Mb9hvvU5C3CiJVgu82-RGuHR01gFiQZAVMzDCCxiRyvlh0MBQxTvGN2oHmf2jIOC7MEEGXrOPGIblsh57v9qXkkZbM7U0OH8zbdQ4jnVO1zD9R1jeDcUVBS22YVLkjWEvC5vrNMdQ416fmEBL9kIHYs2ptVibFKXLxEuh-TQ08w-QGSFzN6221Kggm8B5bEKuuSMbh9mQSSzoXcrpsYaMSbBdd68V6tbi7MAre5V-pHnX86KD80Th4gVmA%3D%3D&amp;tracking_referrer=www.theguardian.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">un estudio publicado en la revista Nature</a> altamente sonado a finales del a&ntilde;o pasado, este c&iacute;rculo vicioso puede resultar en que los bosques emitan m&aacute;s di&oacute;xido de carbono del que capturan.&nbsp;
 
T: &iquest;C&oacute;mo se mide la captura de carbono en un bosque? &iquest;Qui&eacute;n lo revisa? &iquest;Existe alguna regulaci&oacute;n o normativa internacional que se encargue de ello?
L: La captura de carbono en un bosque se puede conocer midiendo el crecimiento de los &aacute;rboles. Al medir el di&aacute;metro a la altura del pecho, la altura total, la altura de la copa e identificando la especie, se puede conocer el volumen y la densidad de la madera que el &aacute;rbol contiene, y esto se puede traducir a toneladas de di&oacute;xido de carbono equivalente (tCO2e). Esta unidad es la misma que se utiliza para medir la contaminaci&oacute;n de una empresa, convirti&eacute;ndose en una herramienta efectiva que nos permite comparar la contaminaci&oacute;n que se genera con la captura de carbono, es decir, la cantidad de esa contaminaci&oacute;n que se secuestra y por ende, se compensa. Afortunadamente, no es necesario medir todos los &aacute;rboles del bosque, ya que a trav&eacute;s de procesos estad&iacute;sticos se seleccionan sitios de muestreo cuya medici&oacute;n resulta representativa para la totalidad del &aacute;rea del proyecto.
 Es importante recalcar que no toda la madera que hay en un bosque se puede traducir a bonos de carbono, ya que el crecimiento vegetal previo al inicio del proyecto no puede contabilizarse como bonos porque ya exist&iacute;a; no es adicional. La captura de carbono que se puede convertir en bonos comienza a partir de que los due&ntilde;os de la tierra deciden implementar el proyecto y se realiza la medici&oacute;n de l&iacute;nea base, que es el estudio que indicar&aacute; cu&aacute;nto carbono hab&iacute;a al comienzo. A partir de aqu&iacute;, todo el crecimiento representa bonos. Ahora bien, existen distintos protocolos internacionales que sirven para certificar que las mediciones de l&iacute;nea base y las estimaciones de producci&oacute;n de bonos no est&eacute;n sobre o subestimadas, lo cual es muy importante porque estos proyectos deben estar lo m&aacute;s apegados a la ciencia y a la realidad posible. Los dos protocolos m&aacute;s utilizados en M&eacute;xico son aquellos de la Reserva de Acci&oacute;n Clim&aacute;tica de California (CAR, por sus siglas en ingl&eacute;s) y Verra.

Sobre la entrevistada: Lucero trabaja en Toroto como Gerente Sr. de Operaciones Centro. Estudi&oacute; la licenciatura en Biolog&iacute;a y una maestr&iacute;a en Ciencias de la Sostenibilidad en la UNAM. Lo que m&aacute;s le gusta de la naturaleza es la diversidad de formas de vida que hay y la relaci&oacute;n que distintas culturas han creado con ellas. En su tiempo libre le gusta ver a sus amigos y visitar lugares al aire libre.
